Fittings
In precision mechanics, fit refers to the degree of ‘looseness’ with which a shaft is inserted into a bored hole. This coupling is related to the tolerance or allowance of both parts’ dimensions. The shaft and the orifice must be of a similar diameter, otherwise there will not be a correct adjustment.
The leeway permitted between the design and the actual product is called manufacturing tolerance, essentially giving some wiggle room in final product production. According to a definition from an industry standard, ASME Y14. 5M , tolerance is “the total amount a specific dimension is permitted to vary.
The types of fits depend upon the actual limit of the hole or shaft which can be divided into three categories which are: Clearance fit. Interference fit. Transition fit.
